Toss the Salad? No Way!
We are excited to say that Transition Sarasota has a partnership with Worden Farm to glean excess produce at the Sarasota Farmers Market on Saturdays. Worden Farm donates things like lettuce and greens that won’t survive the trip back to Punta Gorda, as well as excess produce (think way too many cucumbers). Toss the salad? No way! We use this fresh organic produce to help feed people in our community who are food insecure. This is a game changer for them. Fresh veggies means better nutrition and better health. It means struggling families can eat fresh food instead of packaged food.
Since farmers market gleaning is smaller in volume, our volunteers take the fresh produce straight to food pantries, shelters, and food kitchens on the same day. The produce is used to make meals for unsheltered folks and those staying at safe shelters and to provide fresh food to pantries in low income areas. Often the food is used the day we deliver it. Now that’s fresh! So far, Worden Farm has donated a total of 788 pounds of organic produce for our neighbors in need.
Worden Farm, a certified organic farm located in Punta Gorda, is a huge presence at the Sarasota Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. During the growing season from October to May, they bring farm-fresh produce to their market location downtown on State Street. This time of year you will see many varieties of lettuces, chard, cucumbers, zucchini, squashes, and much more.
Thank you so very much, Worden Farm, for your incredible generosity. What an amazing gift this is to our community. Lettuce all come out to the market and support them on Saturdays! (yes, pun happily intended)
